Innovative Early Childhood Identity and Belonging Programme for 0-5’s in Donegal

Donegal County Childcare Committee (DCCC) is delighted to announce that they have successfully attained funding of €71,000 for an innovative programme of activities aimed at children 0-5 and their parents. The funding was awarded to Donegal County Childcare Committee through the Peace III Programme managed for the Special EU Programmes Body by Donegal County Council.

During the past ten years, many childcare services in Donegal have welcomed children from various family backgrounds and diverse communities, often without any additional resources or training. As a programme that promotes equality and embraces diversity have been slow to emerge for the 0-5 year age group, DCCC have been proactive in sourcing funding to develop an initiative to support the Early Childhood sector in this area of their work.

With the funding, DCCC propose to develop a programme called The Early Childhood Identity and Belonging Programme, in the coming months. The initiative will provide practical training, meaningful activities and suitable resources for early childhood educators working with children 0-5 years around the areas of diversity, respect for difference, identity and belonging through the mediums of art and drama. A series of workshops will also be provided for children and parents across the county. The programme will demonstrate clear connections and links to Irelands two new quality and curriculum frameworks Síolta and Aistear, as Identity and Belonging is a central strand within each framework.

On behalf of Donegal County Childcare Committee, Avril Sweeney, Manager would like to thank Donegal County Council and the Donegal CDB Peace & Reconciliation Partnership for awarding DCCC with the funding and recognising the need for such a programme to support children and parents in County Donegal.

During the past ten years, many services in Donegal have welcomed children from various family backgrounds and diverse communities, often without any additional resources or training. DCCC consultations with the early childhood sector in Donegal tell us that educators are anxious to gain information, training and resources around providing a fully inclusive curriculum programme suitable for the diverse needs of all children, regardless of their culture or background. As a programme that promotes equality and embraces diversity have been slow to emerge for the 0-5 year age group, DCCC have been proactive in sourcing funding to develop an initiative to support the Early Childhood sector in this area of their work.

How we adhere to the Síolta Principles in our service: Meeting your ECCE contract commitments in everyday practice with children and families.

The ECCE contract requires services to adhere to the principles of Síolta. The Pobal ECCE Audit visits will in future check that services participating in the ECCE scheme are meeting this contractual commitment. This workshop will help practitioners to both practice the principles and prepare for the audit visit.

The 12 Síolta Principles bring together principles of early childhood care and education that have been important in the sector for a long time. Síolta reminds us that we need to live and share these principles. Following this workshop practitioners will be able to:

Discuss the Síolta principles with parents, children and inspectors

Demonstrate how you implement them in everyday practice

Document evidence of the principles in practice
